Beijing has 475 research centers, and more than 60 institutions of higher learning, including Peking University and Tsinghua University, whose economic and business programs are currently considered the premier training ground for emerging Chinese business leaders. Many international students from elsewhere in Asia, North America, Europe, and elsewhere come to Beijing to study. Beijing continually works to improve its kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, as well as develop a pre-school system for 0-6 years old.

To promote economic growth and position itself as a key commercial center, Beijing has undertaken various initiatives to attract foreign investment, and created Beijing Finance Street (BFS), a 35-block area which offers a collaborative environment for foreign and domestic financial institutions and Chinese regulatory agencies. Over 1000 financial institutions reside inside the district. In 2007, more than 80% of FDI went to services. The booming cultural and creative industry has become an attractive investment area.. In 2007, 447 foreign companies came to Beijing with a realized investment of about US$880 million, a year-on-year increase of 62.9%. Global names such as Apple and Vodafone came to Beijing in 2007.

In the past decade, China's total telecommunications turnover increased by 35 times. So far Beijing has 9 million local telephone subscribers and 16 million mobile subscribers. Sixty percent of households have access to cable television, and there are over 3.5 million broadband internet users.
