In Asian tradition, the rat is considered to be quite clever and that's why the year of the rat starts the Asian zodiac calendar.

According to myth, twelve animals jostled for rank on the calendar, and in order to settle the matter the Gods told the animals that the first one to cross the river would have the honor to lead the zodiac cycle. All twelve animals plunged into the water. Unbeknownst to the fast-moving ox, the rat had strategically hitched a ride on its back. When the opposite shore was near, the rat jumped off the ox onto the land, thus becoming the first to touch the shore.
