"The Art of Rice: Spirit and Sustenance in Asia"
This major traveling exhibition examines the extraordinary significance
of rice in Asian society through a cross-cultural study of the visual
arts. "The Art of Rice" combines the research of an international
group of twenty-two anthropologists, arts specialists, artists and museum
specialists working in universities and museums. The exhibition is the
first of its kind to apply a comprehensive approach to this subject, and
its interdisciplinary scholarship provides new insights through the comparative
analysis of materials from India, Bali, Japan, Nepal, China, Korea, Vietnam,
Java, Laos, Thailand and the Philippines. "The Art of Rice"
introduces audiences to the wide range of rice-related artistic expression
- ranging from Javanese puppets to Balinese rice god figures, from 19th-century
textiles to Zen paintings - while exploring issues of economics, politics,
history, philosophy and religion.
Curated by Roy Hamilton, curator for Asian and Pacific Collections at
the Fowler Museum, and made possible in part by support from the National
Endowment for the Humanities, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Henry Luce
Foundation and the Getty Trust.
